Long motorcycle trips can be a blast. Enjoy logging hours on the open road, soaking up new sights, and exploring new destinations. But these types of trips do take some extra effort to ensure a successful experience.  A day-long road trip, for example, is a different beast than a simple cruise across town.

Here at Jim Moroney's Inc., we want to support and improve your motorcycle lifestyle. We've gathered up the following tips for long motorcycle trips. For more advice or to shop motorcycles for sale, reach out to our friendly staff. Our dealership is based in New York and we proudly serve those in Newburgh and Cornwall as well.

Build Up Your Endurance

Riding a motorcycle is an athletic activity. Muscle groups are engaged to control the beast of a machine, after all! Just like you wouldn't go from sitting on the couch all day to attempting a marathon, you shouldn't jump from short motorcycle rides to long-distance adventures.

Instead, build up your physical and mental endurance. Slowly extend the time of your trips. Eventually, you will be embarking on your ideal length of touring trip - but in a way that's comfortable and safe.

Plan Out The Logistics Of The Route

Sure, you may know where you want your long-distance motorcycle trip to end. But what is the best way to get there?

You may want to take the quickest route, giving yourself more time at the destination. Or you may want to take the most fuel-efficient route, helping out your wallet. Or you may want to take the most scenic or attraction-filled route. Think about the type of ride you want, then build out the route accordingly.

Remember to plan for pit stops. You'll eventually need to use the bathroom, give your eyes and brain a break, stretch your legs, eat a meal, and fill up the gas tank. If there are tourist attractions along the way, such as an iconic viewpoint or restaurant, take advantage of them! Combine necessary breaks with a fun attraction to make the most of the ride.

Check That Your Motorcycle Is Ready For A Long Ride

Before you head out, give your motorcycle a thorough inspection. Make sure there are no red flags that could pose problems on the trip. It's much better to find an issue in the comfort of your driveway...rather than in the middle of nowhere with no service department in sight.

Look over your motorcycle. Make sure the tires are inflated properly, the fluid levels are good, the lightbulbs are all working, and so on. Go for a short test drive around your neighborhood to ensure the brakes are working well. If you have any concerns, bring your motorcycle to our service department and we can get it repaired and road-trip ready.

Pack Your Motorcycle Efficiently

Motorcycles only have so much storage space. Make the most of it!

Start by packing the essentials. Snacks are necessary, for example, but a week's worth of trail mix is not. Bring along food, water, a toolkit, a first aid kit, and waterproof outerwear if there is the chance of rain. If you'll be staying somewhere overnight, bring clothing, any medications, and toiletries.

As much as possible, bring travel-sized versions of products or rely on the hotel's complimentary items. Consider getting backpacking equipment when possible. These items are designed to take up minimal space.

Remember that most items are easily accessible at a nearby grocery store. If you are unsure about an item, leave it behind. If you truly end up needing it, you can swing by the store during the ride.
