History of the Harley-Davidson® Sportster® Motorcycle
The first Harley-Davidson® Sportster® motorcycles hit the market in 1957. It made a splash in part because of the unique Ironhead 900cc V-twin engine — it was the brand's first foray into high-performance HOV engines. Over this engine's 28-year production run, the company added a 1000cc option.
The first Sportster® motorcycles were lightweight and built for speed, with a range that extended up to 100 miles per hour. The rear suspension created a comfortable ride. Add in the eye-catching, sport-inspired styling, and a legend was born.
Evolution of the Harley-Davidson® Sportster® Motorcycle
Sportster® motorcycles are still an icon of the industry. In 1986, Harley-Davidson replaced the original engine with the Evolution® V-twin engine. This engine is still in production today, though it now comes in both 883cc and 1200cc versions.
In 1975, the U.S. Department of Transportation standardized the regulations for gear placement; from then on, the gear shift was moved to the left side. In 1991, Harley-Davidson replaced the original four-speed transmission with a five-speed version. A few years later, the company replaced chain-drive systems with a belt-drive model. Then, it standardized the clutch and oil tank for consistent performance.
The late 1990s and early 2000s saw further improvements that turned the Sportster® motorcycle into the reliable machine we know today. From electric speedometers to a redesigned frame, each adjustment improved the quality without affecting the head-turning style. The bikes also gained weight over the decades; modern versions are considerably heavier than the original, which came in under 500 pounds.
