Troubleshooting Common Motorcycle Problems
All motorcycles will eventually experience maintenance issues. Some of these problems can be handled by riders, saving the time and money that goes along with visiting a service department. We've gathered up the common motorcycle issues, and how to handle them, below.

Bad Fuel
The Problem
The fuel goes bad, which can damage the engine and decrease the motorcycle's performance.
This often happens during long-term winter storage or when the motorcycle isn't ridden enough. If you ride fewer than 25 miles a week, you are at risk of the fuel going bad.
Prevention
Invest in fuel stabilizer and add it to the gas tank. Turn the engine on for a few minutes and let the stabilizer get to work.
The Solution
If the fuel has already gone bad, you will want to replace it.
Diminished Fuel Efficiency
The Problem
A motorcycle may not be getting the fuel efficiency it should.
Prevention
Adjust riding habits to better promote fuel efficiency, such as driving at a lower speed.
The Solution
Sometimes changing the engine oil solves the issues.
Dead Battery
The Problem
A battery may die, making it impossible to hit the road.
Prevention
Choose one of two approaches:
- Ride the motorcycle more often.
- Connect the battery to a trickle charger.
The Solution
If the battery is already dead, take the time to give it a full recharge.
Bad Drive Chain
The motorcycle drive chain feels off and can be at risk of snapping, which can cause a dangerous accident.
Prevention
Make sure to routinely add lube to the motorcycle drive chain. It's also important to regularly check the tightness and tighten as needed.
The Solution
Motorcycle drive chains loosen with age, so you may need to replace it.
Bad Tires
The Problem
An issue with the tires can cause many issues, from reduced fuel efficiency to a greater risk of an accident.
Prevention
Take the time to regularly inspect the tires.
Start by checking the tread occasionally, which gets worn down over time. Eventually, the tires will have too little tread to maintain traction and will need replacement.
Try to check the tire air pressure before each ride and adjust as needed.
Finally, look over the tires every so often for signs of damage or objects embedded in the sidewall.
Solution
If the tires have too little tread or too much damage, it's time to replace them.
